2020 In Review
The Year That Almost Wasn't
Well, it looks like we’re coming up on the final lap of 2020. It has been an extremely difficult race this year. At the green flag we got off to a pretty good start. We got the tires warmed up and the car up to speed, things seemed to be going reasonably well.
By the end of the first quarter of the race we started having more yellow caution flags. A full course yellow finally changing to red, suspending the race due to a COVID-19 accident in turn 5. The track crew finally got that cleared and the race restarted at what would be the mid-point of the allotted time.
We were back racing and moving toward the front of the pack. We celebrated the teams 37th birthday during one of our pit stops! There were also a couple of other events going on track side during the race. During another pit stop, with driver change, we took a break to eat some ice cream. There was also a great fly-by of some very interesting aircraft during the race.
Ultimately, there was another major crash in Canada Corner when COVID-19 collected many of the cars left in the race. This resulted in the final red flag ending the race. We ran a great race and were doing our best to keep running at the end, but all were finally defeated by COVID-19. We’ll put the race car on the trailer and head home to plan for upgrades to the engine and tranny and look forward to next years race season!
This has been a difficult year for Valley Vettes and certainly not what I expected as president. There does appear to be some potential for a better summer next year with the COVID vaccine available in good numbers. We have to look for the silver lining wherever possible. My corvette is resting under its winter blanket, dreaming of long drives where it can stretch its legs and let its rumble be heard. As they say ‘this too shall pass’ and we can look forward to sharing good times and fellowship with our Valley Vettes family.
If you have the opportunity to support any of the clubs advertisers, please do so. They are also struggling to stay afloat. I had the opportunity to send some business toward ‘Back to Original’ in New London. I would rather be visiting a supper club, but this at least gave business to one of our advertisers.
Bottom line is make sure you take care of yourselves first! We want to see all of your smiling faces on the other side of this pandemic.
Be safe out there!
